Update: Officer-Involved Shooting in Oakland

A man shot by Oakland police this afternoon after a pursuit and alleged carjacking attempt in West Oakland died at a hospital from his injuries, police said.

At 2:39 p.m., officers in the area of 69th Avenue and International Boulevard spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to a previous armed robbery, according to police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson.

The officers attempted to pull the driver over, but he fled, leading police on a pursuit through Oakland city streets. An Oakland police helicopter tracked the car during the pursuit, Watson said. The pursuit lasted about seven miles until the suspect crashed into another car on 27th Street between Northgate Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Watson said.

The suspect ran from the car and, armed with a gun, tried to carjack another driver, Watson said. As police ran up there was a confrontation with the suspect and at least one officer opened fire. The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital, where he died. Police have not released his name and identified him only as a 24-year-old Oakland resident.

No officers were injured during the confrontation. Watson could not say whether the suspect fired his gun during the confrontation but said a gun believed to be the suspect’s was recovered at the scene. The Oakland police homicide and internal affairs units are investigating the shooting along with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

An Oakland police officer shot and wounded an armed robbery suspect who was attempting a carjacking this afternoon, according to police.

The shooting followed a police pursuit of the suspect from the area of 69th Avenue and International Boulevard, according to police.

At 2:39 p.m., officers there spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to a previous armed robbery. Police chased the driver to the area of 27th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, where the suspect had run from the car.

Police found him trying to carjack another vehicle, according to police. An officer opened fire on the suspect and wounded him.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

No police officers were injured.

Police have not disclosed the condition of the suspect or elaborated on the events that led to the shooting.

Oakland police are responding to an officer-involved shooting this afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened in the area of 27th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to police.

Police did not immediately disclose whether any suspects or officers were wounded by gunfire. On- and off-ramps for Interstate Highway 980 at 27th Street are closed during the police investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.
