Two PHS Athletes Sign with Division I Teams
Arlyn Upshaw will be swimming for UCLA and Michael Hernandez will be playing lacrosse at the University of Michigan.
Two impressive student athletes, Arlyn Upshaw and Michael Hernandez, signed letters of intent to play Division I collegiate athletics Wednesday. Parents, friends, coaches and adminstrators gathered for the small ceremony in the school library.
In a statement about the UCLA Swimming & Diving Team's new recruits, Coach Cyndi Gallagher excitedly touted Upshaw's versatility—she's posted fast times in back stroke, fly, and the individual medley while competing with the Concord-based Terrapins Swim Team. Upshaw joins two of her former Terrapins teammates on the UCLA squad, which is currently ranked 25th.
Hernandez, a midfielder, is set to join the University of Michigan Lacrosse Team, which has just begun practices for its first season as an NCAA Division I program after winning the MCLA Division I national championship in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Hernandez is an alumn of the Alcatraz Outlaws and Skyline Lacrosse clubs.
