Police this morning are investigating a shooting death on Interstate Highway 880 in San Leandro. Officers with the San Leandro Police Department responded at 12:55 a.m. to assist the California Highway Patrol on a report of a multi-vehicle crash on the highway near Marina Boulevard.
After arriving, the CHP assumed the investigation of the crash, and the San Leandro officers left the scene, police said. At 2:10 a.m., CHP officers still at the scene heard gunshots fired north of their location near the Marina Boulevard off-ramp. The CHP officers came across a vehicle parked on the right-hand shoulder just north of the Marina Boulevard overpass.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide. No other information about the investigation was immediately available. The incident closed northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 880 at Marina Boulevard from 2 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The highway has since been reopened.
