Protesters March to Lakeview Elementary

Nearly 200 people marched Saturday from downtown Oakland to Lakeview Elementary School on Grand Avenue, protesting the closure of Lakeview and four other Oakland schools.

A 1.7-mile march to protest the closure of five Oakland public schools, led by a coalition of community organziers, began at Frank Ogawa Plaza and made its way to Lakeview Elementary School Saturday, according to this Oakland North article.

Teachers, parents and other protesters have been camping out for more than a week at Lakeview, 746 Grand Ave., one of the schools closed this month by the Oakland Unified School District.

Superintendent Tony Smith has said the school district will save about $2 million a year by closing the schools, and will use that money to improve other schools. The other four elementary schools the district plans to close are Lazear, Marshall, Maxwell Park and Santa Fe.
