Revisit History Through Fresh Eyes, Hear Classical or Innovative Music

There's plenty of music experimentation happening at Mills College, or you can stop by the Cathedral of Christ the Light to hear a classical piece by Haydn. And don't forget about Piedmont Goes Green, a great forum discussion of sustainability initiatives in Piedmont.


  • Where/When:     Oakland Chinese Cultural Center, 388 Ninth St., Oakland. Friday, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
    Why Go:     Learn how Dolores Huerta and Cruz Reynoso initiated the conversation between unions and government about the rights of farmworkers. In light of the recent news both relating to unions and farm workers' rights, this conversation is especially relevant.

    Where/When:     Littlefield Concert Hall, Mills College, 5000 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 8 p.m., Saturday-Sunday, 4 p.m.
    Why Go: Hear the latest innovations in electronic music, music installation and instrument building from the music program at Mills.

  • VISIT DIPLOMACY'S PAST AT HISTORY DAY CONTEST
    Where/When:     Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak St., Oakland. Saturday, noon-3 p.m. Awards ceremony and concert follow in The Forum at Laney College, 900 Fallon St., Oakland, 3-4:30 p.m. 
    Why Go: Over 200 hundred students from Alameda and Contra Costa Counties will be presenting their creative projects on this year's theme “Debate and Diplomacy: Successes Failures, Consequences.” Culture Clash's Ricardo Salinas will perform as well. Come see what diplomacy looks like through young eyes.

  • Where/When:     Cathedral of Christ the Light, 2121 Harrison St., Oakland. Saturday, 8-9:30 p.m.
    Why Go: Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass was meant to be heard in a space just like the Cathedral by the lake. Sung by the Oakland Symphony Chorus.
