Oakland Man, 18, Killed In Fiery, Multi-Vehicle Crash During Police Pursuit

Deputies were attempting to stop the Acura, with two other Oakland men inside, for possible crime investigation when Hwy 1 melee occurred.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA – A man killed in a collision after a short pursuit Wednesday evening on state Highway 1 in Monterey County has been identified as 18-year-old Oakland resident Emel Shivers, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Shivers was allegedly one of three Oakland men in an 2001 Acura TL that Monterey County sheriff's deputies tried to stop because it may have been connected to more than one vehicle burglary.

At 5:38 p.m. the Acura was on northbound Highway 1 nearing Palo Colorado as a sheriff's deputy was pursuing it. The Acura crossed into the southbound lane and hit a 2008 Ford F-250.

CHP officials said the Acura sustained major damage as it spun in the southbound lane while the Ford went off the shoulder and caught fire in a field.

The Acura then struck a 2008 Ford Escape traveling behind the truck.

CHP officials said the collision caused Shivers to be ejected from the Acura and thrown down an embankment. He died before he could be treated at a hospital.

Another occupant of the Acura was also ejected and a third was partially ejected.

CHP officials said the two, 19- and 26-years-old, may be arrested for burglary among other offenses but no arrests were made as of Friday afternoon. The names of the two have not been released.

A good Samaritan stopped at the scene and heroically pulled the occupant of the Ford truck from her vehicle seconds before it became engulfed in flames.
