Flights from San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles were among those affected.

A computer glitch grounded hundreds of Southwest Airlines flights for several hours on Friday night, an airline spokeswoman said.

The problem began at about 8 p.m. Pacific time, Southwest spokeswoman Michelle Agnew said. About 250 flights were affected, she said.

A backup system was activated late Friday night, allowing many flights to resume.

A San Francisco International Airport duty manager said Southwest employees had to manually check in passengers, and that a "couple of" departing flights were delayed at the airport and two were canceled.

Several flights from Oakland International Airport were also delayed, according to an Associated Press article.

The problem mostly affected flights along the West Coast.
