Suspect Fatally Shot by Oakland Police Identified

A sexual assault suspect who was fatally shot in a confrontation with Oakland police early Monday morning was identified by police today as 49-year-old Antonio Clements. In an update issued today, Oakland police said Sgt. Abdullah Dadgar and Officer Sophia Coysh went to Clements’ residence in the 3800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way at about 1:30 a.m. on Monday to investigate a report that he had sexually assaulted an adult woman at his residence several hours earlier.

Police said while Dadgar, a 14-year veteran, and Coysh, who has only been an officer for a year, were in front of the home, Clements came out and began shooting at the officers with an assault rifle but Dadgar and Coysh returned fire, striking Clements. Dadgar was shot during the exchange of gunfire and he and Clement were both transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, according to police.

Clements was pronounced dead a short time later. Dadgar has undergone two surgeries but is recovering from his injuries, police said. Officers recovered the AK-47 assault rifle that Clements allegedly used from the scene, according to police. The shooting is the fourth involving Oakland police this year and the second resulting in a fatality, he said. It’s being investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s homicide and internal affairs units as well as by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who visited Dadgar in the hospital shortly after he was shot, said on Monday that she had met Dadgar and his family when he was promoted to sergeant recently and described him as “an outstanding officer.”
