Teen Gang Member Charged In Murder Of Cousin

The cousins were allegedly affiliated with rival gangs.

OAKLAND, CA — A 19-year-old reputed gang member has been charged with murder for allegedly making a phone call to a colleague that led to the fatal shooting in Oakland of her 17-year-old cousin, who reputedly belonged to a rival gang, according to court documents.

Olga Gisel Salgado was charged and arraigned on April 4 in connection with the fatal shooting of Maynor Funes-Salgado, her cousin, in the 1100 block of East 23rd Street at about 6:30 p.m. on April 2, according
to court records.

Funes-Salgado's 20-year-old brother was also shot but survived, according to police.

Berkeley attorney Michal Tal was appointed to represent Salgado at a hearing on April 10 and Salgado is scheduled to return to court Tuesday to enter a plea.

Oakland police Sgt. Michael Cardoza wrote in a probable cause statement that Olga Salgado is affiliated with the Norteno gang and on April 2 she placed a phone call to another Norteno member to beat up some members of the rival Surenos gang, including her cousin, Funes-Salgado, who Cardoza said is affiliated with that gang.

Cardoza said a Norteno member responded to the area and shot and killed Salgado's cousin. The gang member who carried out the shooting apparently is still at large because the person isn't named in the charging documents.

Cardoza wrote that a witness described the phone call that Salgado placed that led to the fatal shooting of her cousin. Salgado was arrested at her home in the 1100 block of East 23rd Street after the shooting, according to Cardoza.

In addition to murder, Salgado is charged with assault with a firearm for the shooting of her cousin's brother and with an enhancement clause alleging that she carried out the crime to benefit a criminal street gang.

A second suspect, Erick Canseco, 23, is charged with being an accessory in the shooting.

Cardoza wrote that Canseco drove the unnamed shooter to the 1100 block of East 23rd Street, where the shooter located Funes-Salgado and his brother walking on the sidewalk.

Cardoza said the shooter got out of Canseco's Honda Prelude, pulled out a firearm and shot Funes-Salgado and his brother multiple times.

Funes-Salgado was pronounced dead at the scene but his brother survived, police said.

Cardoza wrote that Canseco drove the shooter away from the shooting scene and did not contact police to report the shooting. Cardoza said that after Canseco was arrested the next day at his home in the 1800 block of San Antonio Way, several blocks away from the shooting scene, he "admitted his involvement in the incident."

Canseco is being held in lieu of $70,000 bail and is also scheduled to return to court Tuesday to enter a plea.
