Weekend Things: Curiosities, Art Deco, and a Relay for Life
Book Zoo hosts a unique art reception, cancer survivors gather in Oakland, and a pair of local of historians lead a tour from uptown to the lake this weekend.

Artist Danielle Schlunegger has curated a collection of natural artifacts that teeter between the real and the imagined. These unusual specimens, which are not made of flesh and bone, but of book pages, plant leaves, fur and other materials, will be on display at the opening reception.

SATURDAY
You may be familiar with the Mountain View Cemetery already, but you may still learn something new from the leaders of this tour, Dennis Evanosky and Chris Patillo. Both are extremely well informed and passionate about local history, so bring your questions.

This annual event brings together cancer survivors as well as friends and family who have been affected by the disease. Participants will walk or run laps at Skyline High School to bring awareness to the disease and celebrate the lives of survivors.

This tour is sure to be one of the most fascinating as it places an emphasis on a number of Art Deco buildings such as the Paramount Theater, Sweet's Ballroom, Fox Theater and the Kaiser Center, making its way to views of Lake Merritt. The tour is led by two of Bay Area's most trusted local historians, Dennis Evanosky and Chris Patillo.

This duo of talented women have performed all over the Bay Area singing and playing a range of Andean instruments. Lichi Fuentes, from Chile, is also the musical director at La Peña, and her musical partner Alisa Peres teaches music in Bay Area schools.
