Wet Weather Brings Floods, Outages and Transit Disruptions to Bay Area

Continuing showers are causing floods, blocking roadways, disrupting transit and causing power outages throughout the Bay Area this morning, officials said. The National Weather Service issued a Bay Area-wide urban and small creek flood advisory this morning that will last until 7 a.m.

The California Highway Patrol is already responding to several reports of roadway flooding on U.S. Highway 101 in the areas of Petaluma, Novato, Redwood City, and Mill Valley, on Interstate Highway 280 near San Francisco, and on Interstate Highway 680 in Concord. A mudslide has also blocked both lanes on southbound Old Santa Cruz Highway near Idylwild Road in the Los Gatos area as of 5:43 a.m., according to the CHP.

Flooding has been reported in San Francisco around the Noe Valley neighborhood, along with other nearby locations within the city. Pacific Gas and Electric is working to restore power to over 2600 residents in San Francisco, along with 2200 on the lower peninsula and over 100 other customers throughout the east and north bay, officials said.

The storm is expected to last into Thursday, bringing up to 4 inches of rain in coastal mountain areas and up to 2 inches in lower-lying urban area. There may be isolated thunderstorms, hail and strong winds in the higher coastal areas as well, according to the weather service.
