11 Cars Crash In Chain Reaction Following Fatal Motorcycle Wreck
A motorcyclist riding on I-80 was killed Saturday night after colliding with an SUV.
HERCULES, CA — A motorcyclist riding on Interstate Highway 80 in the city of Hercules, in Contra Costa County, was killed Saturday night after colliding with an SUV.
The collision in the westbound lanes created a chain reaction that first involved two vehicles that struck the rider separately, before nine others crashed at about 11:30 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Dan Gilmore.
The rider--who Gilmore said was a man in his mid-20s from Yuba City, in Sutter County--was pronounced dead at the scene, just west of Sycamore Avenue.

Gilmore said the wreck occurred when the motorcycle collided with a blue Honda CRV, causing the rider to be ejected. The man was then struck by another vehicle.
Multiple other vehicles then crashed at the scene in a chain reaction before the lanes were closed. Two people suffered minor injuries in the chain reaction crashes.

The westbound lanes were closed for about an hour and a half, before the interstate was partially reopened. All lanes were open after about four and half hours of investigating the scene, Gilmore said.
He said the crash remained under investigation as of Sunday afternoon.
