Alarming Truancy Rate at Pinole Valley High School

State government data show that the high school has had a problem, relative to other schools in the district, county and state.

The percentage of tardy students and unexcused absences at Pinole Valley High School hit more than 100 percent last school year, according to figures compiled by the California Department of Education.

The department's Web site shows that among the school's 1,538 students, there were 1,570 cases of students who were late or had unexcused absences at least three times in the 2010-11 school year. That represents 102 percent of the number of enrolled students.

The comparable rate for the West Contra Costa Unified School District as a whole during that year was about 67 percent, and it was about 32 percent in Contra Costa County schools and 30 percent in schools statewide.

The data also show that the Pinole high school also had 24 of the school district's 143 student expulsions and 382 of its 7,024 suspensions.
