Blast from the Past: The Other Plant at the Powder Works
What Refugio Valley, Disneyland, and outdoor bathtubs have in common.
Although most of the history of the Hercules Powder Works centers on the main plant next to the bay, the Works also operated another plant – the Black Powder plant, or “Plant B”.
Plant B was located up Refugio Valley from Hercules proper, approximately where Hercules High stands today. A good portion of Plant B was constructed from equipment brought in from the original plant, which was closed by the Powder Works in 1914. Originally developed for firearms, black powder was later modified for use as a blasting powder for construction, as well as a component in fireworks.
To help combat fires as a result of explosions in such a remote location, bathtubs filled with water were strategically located throughout the valley. The powder was transported down the valley by narrow gauge railcars. Wooden boardwalks were built in the center of the tracks, which provided smooth surfaces on which to transport handcarts.

Black powder production came to an end by 1955. After the railway was dismantled, a portion of if was sold to the Walt Disney Company for use in the Monorail system at its new Disneyland theme park.

A good portion of the material for this post was obtained from the wonderful book “Images of America: Hercules,” available through the Hercules Historical Society. Although we’re deep into summer, it’s never too early to start thinking about gift ideas for the holidays! December will be here before you know it!
