Our Kids' Picks

Stuck for a good summer read? Stop by the library and we'll help you find something, regardless of your age.

As we enter the lazy days of summer, one way to keep bored kids occupied is a good book. After all, a Harry Potter movie may only take a couple of hours to watch, but the book might hold a child’s interest for a week! So here’s a glimpse of what our kids are reading.

Ian’s three year-old Abigail loves the Llama Llama series by Anna Dewdney. These books carry a lot of emotion as Little Llama deals with the day to day struggles of a preschooler. Pinkalicious by Victoria Kann are Abigail’s favorites, though, featuring stories around the colors pink and purple, along with an imaginary unicorn!

Gia’s son Jake just finished kindergarten and is starting to read on his own. He loves the Johnny Boo series. They’re sweet tales that he can read to Gia. Boys of all ages devour the Ninjago books by Greg Farshtey, as they bring the Lego characters to life in action-adventure tales.

Tim’s son Liam is going into sixth grade and loves the Ranger’s Apprentice series for all its action and the The Strange Case of the Origami Yoda for all its sage and silly advice. Liam’s little sister Niah is going into second grade and can't get enough of the Ivy + Bean books, where she identified more with nice girl Ivy than naughty girl Bean. And both kids eat up The Lunch Lady by Jarrett Krosoczka. A secret crime fighter graphic novel in a school cafeteria!

Mary’s girls are all grown up, but are still avid readers and are into the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series — the Swedish crime thrillers that have caused such a sensation.
