Dropping Retirement Benefits Not So Easy for City Council

Two members cannot opt-out of CalPERS.

After rescinding all health benefits in , the Hercules City Council attempted to opt-out of the California Public Employees Retirement System to save the city money.

But Mayor Myrna de Vera and Vice John Delgado, the two longest tenured council members, were unable to drop their retirement benefits, which costs Hercules $150 a month per member. The three remaining members will receive $150 per month each in deferred compensation, the Contra Costa Times reported.
