Forgotten Candle Causes Fire in Hercules Home, Injuring Teen

The 13-year-old girl used a fire extinguisher to try to control the flames.

A candle left burning in a Hercules residence on Tuesday caused a fire in the bedroom of a teen who needed medical assistance for smoke inhalation, according to police. The 13-year-old girl called Hercules police at 4:48 p.m. Tuesday to report the fire in the 100 block of Bedford Court.

It started via a forgotten candle while she was home alone, police said. The girl called again soon afterward and informed dispatchers that she used a fire extinguisher to control the flames, police said. Officers arrived to find heavy smoke still emanating from the upstairs bedroom, police said.

The teen was experiencing signs of minor smoke inhalation and was taken to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, police said. Rodeo-Hercules Fire Protection District firefighters responded and extinguished the remnants of the blaze and vented the home.
