Goat Herding In The East Bay Hills: Photos

In the early morning light, this Peruvian immigrant tends goats with the help of his border collies.

PINOLE AND HERCULES, CA — High up in the East Bay hills, with the fog and Mt. Tamalpais in the distance, a young Peruvian immigrant named Elias tends a herd of goats.

Patch reader Diane Springer snapped a series of photos of Elias and the goats early Tuesday morning. She tells Patch, "The sun had just risen & the morning light is golden."

She chatted with Elias and relays, "He’s on the Pinole-Hercules Ridge Trail, on the Pinole side of the hill, where his trailer has been parked for three days. He will be here for two weeks, allowing the goats to eat the growing green grass on the hill. The eight month old border collie is Mango and the four-year-old herding dog is Chunky."

Elias tends the animals for Goats R Us. On their website, the company says "Our shepherds are recruited from South America, having been referred for their outstanding ability to work with livestock." Diane reports that Elias left his entire family behind in Peru. He has been in the U.S. for three years.

Mt. Tam is featured in two of the photos above. Diane is especially fond of those photos. "Mount Tamalpais is in the background and the fog, along with the morning light, makes this picture so gorgeous, at least to me."
