Hercules Actors Adopt 'Bat Boy'

The Hercules High School spring musical, "Bat Boy," will be playing March 31, April 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9.

Hercules High School will enter a darker world with its spring production, Bat Boy: The Musical.

The rock-based Bat Boy is a stark contrast to the usual upbeat, happy productions of the past few years, such as Seussical and Horton Hears a Who.

The story centers on a half-bat, half-boy creature who lives in a cave in West Virginia. He is adopted by Mrs. Parker, the wife of the town's veterinarian, and she civilizes him. But Bat Boy faces hostility from the town residents, including Mrs. Parker's husband, who see him as as a dangerous outsider and turn him into a scapegoat for all the community’s problems.

The actors, who include HHS freshman Emilio Cuartero as Bat Boy, auditioned in December and began rehearsing in January.

“I’m pretty excited because this is my first time as a lead, but it is also stressful because I have to balance out my school work and [rehearsing for] the musical,” Cuartero said.

Performances are March 31, April 1, 2, 7 ,8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hercules High School theater room. Tickets are $10 for students and $12 for adults.
