Hercules Teacher, Students Help Brighten Nights for Homeless Kids

Ohlone Elementary School teacher Joseph Eyres receives a service award after his class organized a walk-a-thon to give comfort to homeless kids.

Local kids in need can sleep a bit easier thanks to Ohlone Elementary School kids and staff, who raised $185 to go towards Project Night Night. The nonprofit, Night Night, gives tote bags with stuffed animals, blankets and bedtime books to children living in homeless shelters.

Ohlone 5th grade teacher Joseph Eyres recently received a 2012 Service Award from San Francisco non-profit group Project Night Night.

Last Spring, students approached Mr. Eyres with the idea that they do a fundraiser for a local service group. The class decided on a walk-a-thon, and with Mr. Eyres’s and Principal Lonsdale’s help and support, the kids organized the walk-a-thon during recesses over two weeks. Many of Mr. Eyres’s students participated, and they even had a parent match some of the funding from her workplace, Levi Strauss.

Mr. Eyres was very excited with their enthusiasm and motivation and looks forward to more service projects in the future. Go Ohlone students!
