Milionaire Admits Himself Incompetent
Bernardo Fernandez Causes Surprise in Financial Circles.
Our latest Historic Pinole column is about the demise of one of the city's pioneers. It comes from the Feb. 22, 1912 edition of the San Francisco Call newspaper. Born in Portugal in 1828, Bernardo Fernandez moved to Brazil when he was 13 and lived there for nine years before immigrating to Pinole. He after publication of the following article. MARTINEZ. Feb. 21.—Bernardo Fernandez, a millionaire of Pinole, today filed a petition to have his sons, Dr. Manuel. L. and Thomas B. Fernandez, and his wife, Carlotta Fernandez, appointed his guardians. Fernandez is over 84 years old and his family is anxious to protect him and his property. Fernandez is one of' the wealthiest men in Contra Costa county and of late years has been investing money in school and municipal bonds. His business interests throughout the county are extensive, and this action in having himself declared incompetent has caused surprise in financial circles.
