The People have spoken.
Pinole's voters have affirmed the term limits they voted for ten years ago. And they did so in stunning fashion.
The No on P campaign was an issue-based campaign. The issue, in 2008 Pinole's voters approved term limits, by a margin of 73%. But ten years had passed and the city council decided their will outweighed the voters' will and placed the repeal of term limits on the June Ballot. Had this been merely an argument about term limits they could have placed it on the November ballot at a cost of $3,000. But, they placed it on the June ballot at a cost of $33,000. This decision was made in order to keep one council member from terming out before the November election.
The community cried foul. A grass roots effort to oppose this Measure (Measure P) was started and gained widespread support from various organizations. Among them, Fire Fighters Local 1230, Pinole Police Employees Assoc., Democratic Party of CCC, League of Women Voters WCC, West County Democratic Club and the CoCo Tax Payers Association. This was a non-partisan effort about the issues; and the message resonated with voters.
On Tuesday June 5, 2018, Measure P was defeated soundly, the No on P campaign prevailed with 77.83% of the votes.
This has sent a clear message to the Council from the Community. You can not ignore the voice of the people or overturn the will of the people. We want change, we want new leadership, we want fresh visions and ideas.
The Committee Against Measure P, thanks the good people of Pinole for supporting us and for taking a very positive step towards the future of our lovely city.
