Pedestrian Fatally Struck On I-80

The fatal incident happened on westbound Interstate Highway 80 near Richmond Parkway, the CHP said.

PINOLE, CA — A pedestrian was hit by a car and died Tuesday night on Interstate Highway 80 in Pinole, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision was reported around 8:55 p.m. Tuesday on westbound I-80 east of Richmond Parkway.

CHP officers responded to find an adult male pedestrian lying on the roadway. The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene by Fire Department personnel.

The CHP's preliminary investigation indicated a Toyota was traveling in the No. 2 westbound lane when the driver saw a person walking in the lane ahead.

"The driver swerved left in an attempt to avoid striking the pedestrian, however, was unsuccessful," the CHP said. "The driver pulled over and was cooperative during the traffic collision investigation."

CHP determined the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

However, it was undetermined Wednesday night whether the pedestrian may have been intoxicated, the CHP said.

Authorities were also still working to confirm the identity of the pedestrian Wednesday night.

The CHP asked anyone with information about the incident to call its Oakland Area Office at 510- 457-2875.
