Police: Hercules Murder Result of Home Invasion, Robbery That Went 'Terribly Wrong'

The name of the male victim found dead in the garage has not yet been released.

Police said today that one person was killed and another was critically wounded in Hercules on Wednesday during a home invasion robbery that went bad. Hercules police Detective Connie Van Putten said the woman who was wounded is still unconscious and in critical condition.

She had no visible injuries when police found her, Van Putten said. The man who died did have head trauma, Van Putten said. A deputy in the coroner’s office said they are still waiting to notify next of kin before identifying him. Van Putten said an initial investigation indicates that the suspect entered the man’s home through the front door armed with a very realistic-looking BB gun. She said one of the windows that appeared askew when police first arrived at the scene was actually the suspect’s exit route.

“At this point our investigation leads us to believe it was a home invasion robbery that went terribly wrong,” Van Putten said. Police responded to Marigold Place around 2:45 p.m. after callers reported two men fighting, Van Putten said.

When officers arrived, they didn’t see a fight, but as they reached the corner of Buttercup Court a resident flagged them down and told them two men had been fighting in the driveway of a house at 100 Buttercup Court. Officers approached the house and did not see anyone outside, but did see a blood trail from a truck parked in the driveway to the closed garage door.

They also saw what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol, however that gun was later determined to be a BB gun, Van Putten said. Officers called for help before entering the house, where they found a seriously injured woman. She was removed from the house and taken to John Muir Medical Center in critical condition.

Police found a the male victim dead in the garage. Van Putten said the woman, who is in her 50’s, was a good friend of the decedent but they were not living together. A man matching a description of the suspect was located nearby on Marigold at Columbine Drive. He was taken into custody and arrested, Van Putten said. His identity has not yet been released.
