Golfers, BBQ Fans Asked to Help Ease City Budget Cuts

Seeing city fiscal conditions in a continuing in a state of decline and uncertainty for the past few years, volunteers have organized a series of events to raise resources for various recreation services and activities.

The latest effort is the Second Annual Pinole Recreation Golf Tournament, to be held on July 16 at Franklin Canyon Golf Course. Following the tournament will be a barbecue dinner at the Pinole Senior Center, open to non-golfers.

Pinole recreation and senior programs have lost virtually all support from the city budget, which has shrunk in large part because of declining revenue from property and sales tax revenues. Youth and senior senior services traditionally have received support from the city budget, but last year the city council designated them as part of an enterprise fund. That means they must be self-sustaining financially.

The council also raised fees for programs ranging from the Tiny Tots preschool to the cost of lunches at the senior center.

Golfers have until July 6 to register for the tournament. The cost for the golf tournament is $115 per person or $425 per foursome. The entry fee includes participation in an 18-hole scramble format tournament, golf cart, lunch, prize skill contests and the barbecue dinner. Golfers can bring a friend to dinner for $12 per person.
