Surveillance Cameras Approved for High School

Board approves installation of security cameras at Pinole Valley High School.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District school board on Wednesday unanimously approved a proposal to install security cameras at Pinole Valley High School in time for the start of classes in September.

After two years of uncertainty, the board approved a motion to spend no more than $250,000 for the cameras, which will be monitored by the Pinole Police Department. The board approved the project with no discussion.

City officials and some residents have been as a means to deter campus crime. The school district had been cautious, noting the cost and the fact that the high school is scheduled for beginning as soon as 2013. The cameras are expected to be retained once the new school is completed. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2016.
