Suspect Surrenders To Police Dog Following High-Speed Chase

A bite from a police dog convinced a man in Hercules to finally surrender in the attic of a house he had broken into Thursday morning.

HERCULES, CA — A bite from a police dog convinced a man in Hercules to finally surrender in the attic of a house he had broken into Thursday morning, after he led police on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle.

Hercules police arrested a 28-year-old Hercules man -- whom they did not identify -- on suspicion of several offenses, including the following:
- Felony reckless driving;
- Felony evading;
- Three counts of felony residential burglary;
- Possession of a stolen vehicle;
- Felon in possession of a firearm; and
- Possession of an unregistered firearm.

The chase began when a Hercules police officer tried to pull over the suspect's vehicle in the 1500 block of Sycamore Avenue due to a traffic violation. The suspect was driving a 1997 pickup truck reported stolen just a half-hour earlier in Richmond and, instead of stopping, sped the vehicle through the parking lot of a shopping center before speeding on city streets.

Police pursued at a safe distance and requested assistance from the air unit of the California Highway Patrol and from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

When the suspect's vehicle became stuck in wet grass, officers saw the male driver and a female passenger flee on foot toward the city of Rodeo.
Police said the suspect broke into at least two homes in a nearby neighborhood on Harris Street, where he was found in an attic. After refusing to come out, officers sent in the police dog, who bit the suspect in the foot prompting the surrender.
