WestCAT to Begin Operating New 88-Passenger Double Deck Buses

Tuesday, February 5, 2019, WestCAT will Begin Operating New 88-Passenger Double Deck Buses in Regular LYNX Transbay Service

Pinole, CA, February 1, 2019- the Western Contra Costa Transit Authority is excited to introduce its new Alexander Dennis, 88-passenger, double deck commuter buses into regular LYNX Transbay service, Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

LYNX service began in 2005 with three 46-passenger buses on loan from another transit agency. Since then, WestCAT has worked tirelessly to secure funding to expand the Transbay fleet to keep ahead of rapidly increasing demand, which has grown at the rate of 10% or more per year. Since 2005, LYNX has provided over 2.4 Million customers with direct connections between Hercules and San Francisco.

WestCAT added its first 57-passenger coaches in 2008, and has expanded both the number of Transbay trips provided, and the number of buses in the LYNX fleet. In 2016, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, awarded WestCAT a grant to purchase two 88-passenger double decker vehicles, in recognition of the LYNX service’s effectiveness in reducing congestion on the Bay Bridge and Interstate 80 corridor. WestCAT committed additional local funds to purchase a third double decker vehicle for the LYNX. The new vehicles increase the seating capacity of each Transbay bus by 55%, and the low floor design offers easier boarding for both ambulatory passengers and those using mobility devices.
