CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA – A single-car accident caused a small grass fire this afternoon that resulted in the closure of Canyon Road in both directions west of Moraga, according to Moraga-Orinda Fire Chief Stephen Healy.

At about 2 p.m., firefighters responded to a call about a vegetation fire roughly 2 miles west of Moraga, Healy said.

When crews arrived, they discovered a vehicle on fire about 40 feet from the road and down in a small creek area, Healy said.

One man was found inside the car with serious burns and was airlifted to a regional burn center, according to Healy.

It took crews about 20 minutes to extinguish the one-alarm fire that burned roughly an acre of grass and brush around the car. Healy said he expected Canyon Road to remain closed until about 4 p.m.
