Arrest Made In Discovery Bay Shooting Originally Thought Accidental

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY - A man was been arrested in connection with a shooting that was initially reported as accidental on Monday night in unincorporated Contra Costa County, according to county fire and sheriff's officials.

Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies were notified at 9:37 p.m. Monday that a possible accidental shooting had occurred in the 4200 block of Slifer Drive in the community of Discovery Bay.

A man was found at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower leg, according to the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.

A helicopter landing zone was established at the nearby Timber Point Elementary School and the man was flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, according to the fire district.

The man, whose injury is not considered life-threatening, was uncooperative with deputies investigating the shooting, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators later determined that the victim was shot by another man living at the residence during an argument, according to the sheriff's office.

The suspect, identified by sheriff's officials as 41-year-old Paul Nelson, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm. He is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on $50,000 bail.
