Assisteens Host Holiday Party at Meadow Homes Elementary School
When kids help kids, the entire community benefits.

An auxiliary of Assistance League® of Diablo Valley, Assisteens® is comprised of a group of middle school and high school teens who want to make a difference in the Contra Costa community by improving the lives of children, adults, and seniors. They work at Assistance League Way Side Inn Thrift Shop, correspond with homebound seniors, provide various hands-on activities at a local senior care facility, as well as raise funds to host two holiday parties for children.
On Saturday, December 13, fifty Assisteens hosted an annual holiday party for sixty youngsters at Meadow Homes Elementary School, a Monument Corridor School located in Concord. The energetic teens provided gifts and a holiday box for cookies that the eager and appreciative guests could decorate. The Assisteens also organized games, musical chairs, an art session and face painting stations. The highlight of the afternoon involved a visit from the guest of honor, Santa Claus, who distributed gifts from each child’s wish list. When asked how he enjoyed the holiday party, one boy replied, “I wish it could be Christmas every day!”
Ironically, it was the Assisteens who reaped the greater joy, that of giving. Their hours of preparation not only helped elementary schoolchildren celebrate a festive holiday, they showed the young attendees how to enjoy their childhood(s). From that point on, the possibilities became endless; today’s elementary schoolchildren might very well become tomorrow’s Assisteens.
