Calling For A Stop To A Dangerous Pleasant Hill Intersection

Resident Carol Christopher wants the city to replace yield signs with stop signs at dangerous intersections in her neighborhood.

Carol Christopher did not want to ‘yield’ to the feeling that nothing could be done about the dangerous intersection at Elinore and Ardith streets, so she called Pleasant Hill City Hall and said ‘stop.’ City Hall heard.

Eric Hugh, associate traffic engineer with the city, said that staff is looking at the traffic situation throughout the neighborhood, and evaluating which intersections are due for a stop sign to replace the many yield signs that now direct drivers.

For Christopher, who has lived in Pleasant Hill for two years, it was a victory she is savoring.

“It’s not a lot, but it’s empowering,” she said. “There have been many times when I’m sitting in my living room, and I hear a crash. It’s as though people thing ‘yield’ means ‘not me.’”

After continuous accidents at the intersection, Christopher called City Hall and asked for a stop sign at the corner, to replace the yield sign. She said her request was taken, but she heard nothing for several weeks. Finally she called back, and was told that the entire area is being re-evaluated.

“They said those signs were installed a long time ago, when things were much quieter. It’s great that they’re willing to take a look at things now.”

Christopher hopes that her efforts will put a ‘stop’ to the accidents in her neighborhood.
