Dear Valued Library Patron,

“Project Second Chance is INSPIRING!” This is what I scribbled in the welcome book when I arrived at their open house for their new offices in Todos Santos Plaza in Concord last week. It was the first thing that popped into my head and is an accurate and heartfelt representation of my feelings for our fabulous adult literacy program.

Project Second Chance (PSC) provides free and confidential tutoring to adults who speak conversational English and want to improve their basic reading, writing, and spelling skills. Even though the pandemic delayed their office-warming celebration, it did not stop the amazing PSC staff and volunteer tutors from helping over 150 adult learners last year. In response to the pandemic, PSC introduced virtual tutoring services with great success. Seventy-two percent of enrolled adults met at least one of their literacy goals in 2020 – goals like passing the citizenship exam, helping a child with homework, or applying for work.

Not only are the staff and volunteer tutors amazing, so are the students. You can read featured writings by PSC students in an annual publication called “In Our Words.” I have no doubt that, just like me, you will feel inspired after reading them.

By offering both virtual and in-person tutoring options, PSC is positioned better than ever to meet the literacy needs of the community. If you know someone who could benefit from PSC’s services, tell them to call (925) 691-3960 or visit their local branch for more information.

And, if you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor and helping a neighbor improve their basic English reading or writing skills, you can register for an upcoming new tutor orientation at ccclib.org/psc.

Fue lo primero que me vino a la cabeza y es una representación precisa y sincera de mis sentimientos por nuestro fabuloso programa de alfabetización para adultos.

Project Second Chance (PSC) ofrece tutoría gratuita y confidencial a adultos que hablan inglés conversacional y desean mejorar sus habilidades básicas de lectura, escritura y ortografía. A pesar de que la pandemia retrasó la celebración de inauguración de la oficina, no impidió que el increíble personal, los tutores y voluntarios del PSC ayudaran a más de 150 estudiantes adultos el año pasado. En respuesta a la pandemia, PSC introdujo servicios de tutoría virtual con gran éxito.
