Coroner IDs Man Killed In Crash Near Caldecott Tunnel

The rollover accident was Wednesday afternoon on Highway 24.

A man who was ejected from his car and killed in a rollover crash off state Highway 24 near Orinda Wednesday has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 23-year-old Antioch resident David Sotelo.

Sotelo was driving east on state Highway 24 in a 2002 Buick LeSabre when he collided with a 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The car then hit an embankment, went airborne and rolled over several times, ejecting Sotelo, who was not wearing his seatbelt, according to the CHP.

Sotelo died at the scene as a result of injuries suffered in the crash. The initial collision with the Mercedes created debris that also damaged a 2014 Lexus ES 350, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

On Wednesday, Fransen said officers were looking into whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
