After Diablo Valley College volleyball player Daisy Manoa started things off by singing the national anthem, the Vikings competed with their usual passion in a thrilling win over Folsom Lake on Friday in the Big 8.
Jasmine Assia amassed 34 assists and 10 digs as the Vikings rebounded from a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 win.
The scores were 25-22, 15-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-9.
With help from Assia’s deft sets, Jade Lee paced the Vikings with 17 kills, and Cailey Rocquemore and Isabel Villalobos had 10 kills apiece. Taylor Chow had a team-high 12 digs and Rocquemore had 10 digs.
The victory puts DVC (8-7, 4-4) and Folsom Lake (13-6, 4-4) in a tie for fifth place in the powerful Big 8.
On Wednesday, the Vikings fell to San Joaquin Delta 25-15, 25-21, 25-16. Lee had 12 kills and Assia had 15 assists.
This week, DVC will host American River on Wednesday and Cosumnes River on Friday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Vikings, ranked No. 3 in the last week's JC Division III National Poll, suffered their first loss of the season in a 2-1 cliffhanger at Santa Rosa in a Big 8 showdown.
The defeat followed a 13-game unbeaten streak for DVC (10-1-3, 5-1-3).
The Vikings, who upended Santa Rosa 2-1 in the teams’ conference openers, came up just short in the rematch. Santa Rosa star Amanda Galbraith scored two goals sandwiched around a goal by DVC’s Noelle Lemos in an entertaining first half. Cameron Chan assisted Lemos’ goal.
Santa Rosa (12-2, 7-2), San Joaquin Delta (11-2-1, 6-2-1) and DVC are in a tight battle for the Big 8 top spot, with Folsom Lake (10-3-1, 5-3-1) not far behind.
The Vikings will host Cosumnes River at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and then will travel to Folsom Lake on Friday. Cosumes River beat Folsom Lake 1-0 on Friday.
FOOTBALL
The Vikings (4-2, 0-1 Big 8) will try to shake off a 49-7 loss to defending state champion City College of San Francisco (4-2, 1-0) this week when they travel to De Anza (1-5, 0-1) Saturday afternoon.
A strong effort against De Anza would put the Vikings back on track toward a possible playoff berth.
Miles Harrison had the Vikings’ lone touchdown on a soggy Friday night against CCSF, on a 4-yard pass from Jadon Brisendine, who is ranked No. 5 in the state in passing yards per game with 283.2.
Brisendine was 25-for-53 passing against CCSF for 258 yards, with one touchdown and an interception. Friday’s game featured two of the state’s top receivers in Marquese Surrell and CCSF’s Easop Winston. Both had three catches in the showdown.
WATER POLO
It was a tough week for the Vikings men's squad (7-12, 2-2), which fell to host San Joaquin Delta 12-11 in the Big 8 and lost to West Valley 13-4 in the Larry Invitational.
Zac Hudson had a phenomenal effort with eight goals and a steal against Delta, and Gordon Kerns had two goals and four assists, to go with a steal. Will Simpson had two steals and an assist.
In women’s action, DVC (4-9, 1-4) fell to Delta 14-4. Micah Baird had three goals for the Vikings.
