March 4 – Advanced Directives: A Helpful and Complicated Tool
Find out what's happening in Pleasant Hillfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
It’s been said the favorite prayer of elders is to: “Live long, and die quick.” Not all will be so fortunate. Hospitals, physicians and the law often thwart our preferences. Our conversations are peppered with phrases like “pulling the plug” and “vegetative state.” Advanced plans and repeated conversations are our best defense of being at the mercy of others. By popular demand this is a return visit with Dr. John Knowles, M.D. We’re asking him to walk us through the recent versions of Advanced Directives and related resources.
March 11 - Have I a Right to Say When & How I Die?
Whether ending one’s own life is ever morally justified is big news as California and other States consider Physician-Assisted death. Elizabeth Sholes, Director of Special Projects, California Council of Churches, Sacramento, is at the forefront of that debate.
March 18 - How Can I Age in Place?
Don Jenkins is a leader in local efforts to create “Virtual Villages”. You’ve read about it in the local newspapers and heard it mentioned among your neighbors. Do you look forward to moving into a residential community for elders? Not all of us wish to or can afford to do so. Many prefer to make every effort to “age in place” and to learn the nearby resources that could help us accomplish it. Set aside the date and bring your questions.
March 25 - Senior Center Without Walls.
Senior Center Without Walls (SCWW) is a non-denominational program of Episcopal Senior Communities that offers telephone activities, friendly conversation, and an assortment of classes and support groups to older adults in California who find it difficult to participate in activities in their community. Senior participate in the free activities using their own telephones in the comfort of their homes. Hillcrest member Jan Knowles will present information on this volunteer-driven program.
