Family Dispute Led To East Bay Brothers' Murder-Suicide

The 67 year old from Martinez shot and killed his brother, 64, in Pacheco.

A 67-year-old man shot his younger brother in an apparent murder-suicide in Pacheco last Thursday, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

The two men were identified by the coroner’s office as John and Richard Gilmore, aged 67 and 64, respectively. John Gilmore was a Martinez resident and Richard Gilmore lived in Pacheco, according to the coroner’s office.

Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said John shot Richard and then himself. Lee said he couldn’t reveal details of the motive for the shooting but said it stemmed from “an ongoing family issue.”

Deputies were called around 1 p.m. Thursday to a home in the first block of Dalton Court in Pacheco on a report of a disturbance, sheriff’s officials said.

As deputies were en route, dispatchers told them that someone had been shot. The deputies arrived to find two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

One of the two men was transported to a hospital for treatment, while the other had already died, according to the sheriff’s office. Sheriff’s officials said the shooting was not random and that there are no outstanding suspects.
