Fatal Accident On I-680 Reported Tuesday Evening; Southbound Lanes Blocked

Five or six cars involved, according to CHP. Alternate routes advised.

An injury accident has resulted in a fatality and continues to block all southbound lanes of Interstate Highway 680 northeast of Martinez this evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to accident involving five or six vehicles on southbound Highway 680 north of state Highway 4 around 5:15 p.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

One of the vehicles overturned and one person was trapped, he said. The accident initially blocked three lanes but now all southbound lanes are closed at Arthur Road, Van Eckhardt said.

Northbound lanes on Highway 680 near the scene are also experiencing heavy traffic, CHP officials said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 5:27 p.m. and the lanes are estimated to reopen at about 6:40 p.m., according to the CHP.

The Contra Costa County coroner’s office has been called to the scene, according to Van Eckhardt.

Traffic is backed up to the Benicia Bridge, Van Eckhardt said.

To avoid delays, motorists are advised to take Interstate Highway 780 to Interstate Highway 80 to Highway 4, CHP officials said.
