Grass Fire Threatens Homes Near Briones Regional Park

Garden hoses and construction equipment were used until firefighters arrived on the scene.

A 5.1-acre fire that broke out this afternoon close to Briones Regional Park in Martinez has been fully contained, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials said.

The fire was reported at 3:22 p.m. at Carter Acres Lane and Reliez Valley Road in Martinez and was 100 percent contained by firefighters at 4:15 p.m.

Fire Marshal Robert Marshall of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said the blaze left one outbuilding somewhat charred, but no structures or homes were damaged.

A couple of Martinez residents with homes that could have been threatened by the fire’s spread were fighting the blaze back with hoses, Marshall said.

No one was injured by the fire. The suspected cause is a spark from a welder’s torch.
