Gunfire At Contra Costa Co. Sheriff's Department Gun Range Starts Fire

The incident was Thursday near Clayton.

Gunfire at a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department gun range started an 11-acre fire near Clayton Thursday, according to East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jeff Burris.

The fire was reported at 2:30 p.m. at the gun range at 12000 Marsh Creek Road, Burris said. At the site, firefighters found a 3-acre grass fire that was spreading at a moderate pace uphill from the gun range toward the Diablo Valley Ranch rehabilitation camp. The fire was knocked down within 40 minutes, Burris said.

No injuries were reported and damages were limited to grass and several fence posts, according to the fire district.

The cause was determined to be gunfire from sheriff’s deputies practicing at the gun range, Burris said.
