Poll: Should the Police Make PH Motel Guests Give Real Names?

A proposed city ordinance aims to keep criminals out of Pleasant Hill's motels.

It may soon be check out time for Pleasant Hill’s remaining “no-tell” motels. Citing police concerns that some hotels and motels in town shelter criminals, the city council is considering an ordinance that would require all guests provide valid personal and vehicle identification. The ordinance would also require clerks to cough up registration information to any police officer who wants it.

The police department claims that the bad guys know which places don’t insist on valid identification and shift from spot to spot under bogus names. According to the report the police department prepared for the city council, cities like Concord, Antioch and San Ramon have had similar laws for years.

The council will discuss the ordinance Monday.
