PLEASANTON, CA — Kiverdi, a Pleasanton-based technology company that seeks to make products out of carbon, said it's created an "air-based meat" for the first time.

Last month Kiverdi launched Air Protein, a meatless protein made from carbon. Kiverdi says on its website that it has 50 patents granted or pending based on technology inspired by NASA, which found a way to take the carbon dioxide exhaled by astronauts and turn it into power, water and food.

The process behind making Air Protein is similar to that of making yogurt or beer, according to a press release. The company claims its product can be used in meatless burgers, pasta, cereals drinks and more.
