PLEASANTON, CA — An 18-year-old Pleasanton man accidentally detonated a firework on his hand over the weekend, causing serious injury, Pleasanton police said.

The incident occurred Saturday at around 11 p.m. near In-N-Out Burger on Johnson Drive, according to the Pleasanton Police Department. Police officers arrived and applied an emergency tourniquet until emergency crews arrived. The man was transported to a local trauma hospital, and is listed in stable condition, police said.

Although fireworks are illegal in Pleasanton, PPD Lt. Nicholas Albert told Pleasanton Weekly that the department will not pursue criminal charges against the man. Firework violations are subject to citation and fine in the city, the department said.

“This incident is a powerful reminder of how quickly fireworks can change lives in a matter of seconds,” PPD said in a Facebook post. “With the Fourth of July approaching, we want to remind everyone that fireworks are illegal in Pleasanton and can cause severe injuries, fires, and lasting damage - even when people think they are being careful.”
