Pleasanton Council To Revisit Disputed Shell Gas Station Rebrand

PLEASANTON, CA — The Pleasanton City Council will revisit a proposal to rebrand a 76 gas station and Circle K convenience store on First Street to a Shell gas station.

The project includes a new monument, wall, canopy, and pump signage. In February, the city's zoning administrator denied the signage, deeming it inconsistent with General Plan policies that discourage bright franchise colors and prototype corporate signage.

Staff said they supported the site upgrade, but asked for reductions to the amount of Shell's red and yellow branding on the gas station canopy.

The applicant appealed the denial, and in May the Pleasanton Planning Commission voted 3-1 to overturn the decision and approve the project with modifications. Those included a requirement that Shell's corporate color band occupy no more than 50 percent of the canopy fascia height and that the canopy illumination automatically turn off at 10 p.m.

On Tuesday, the council will either conduct a new review of the proposal, uphold the original denial, approve the project under the Planning Commission's conditions, or approve it with additional modifications. Staff recommend the council uphold the original denial.
