PLEASANTON, CA — Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley broke ground on a 66,000-square-foot, three-story wing planned to open in 2029, the health care organization announced.

The wing, connected to the east side of the hospital, will more than double the capacity of the emergency department, Stanford Health Care said. It will also allow the hospital’s laboratory, pharmacy, and sterile processing center to be relocated to larger spaces, and set the stage for further expansion. The expansion will allow the hospital’s emergency department to have 24 additional patient bays, three triage rooms, and a larger patient waiting area.

Emergency visits increased by almost 30% in the Tri-Valley between 2013 and 2023, but emergency departments did not expand, Stanford said.

The addition to the hospital will involve reconfiguring the road that circles the hospital campus. It will also include new infrastructure to support the hospital’s resilience in the event of a major earthquake.

“This expansion means more capacity and enhanced capabilities to meet the growing demand of the East Bay’s fastest-growing region while keeping strong community roots that were established over 60 years ago with ValleyCare Health System,” Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley president and CEO Misty Jones said in a statement.
