PLEASANTON, CA — A Spare the Air Alert has been issued in Pleasanton and across the Bay Area Wednesday, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

High temperatures, light surface winds, and a delayed afternoon sea breeze are expected to produce elevated concentrations of smog throughout the region, particularly in the East Bay, South Bay, Peninsula, and parts of the North Bay.

Pleasanton and the entire Tri-Valley are in the Air District's Eastern Zone, which is expected to see an Air Quality Index of 101, classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, or people with heart or lung disease. Outdoor exercise should only be done in the early morning, when ozone concentrations are lower. Residents are also encouraged to limit their driving, take transit or carpool, refuel vehicles after dusk, and avoid idling their cars.

Temperatures in Pleasanton are expected to reach a high of around 101 Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to cool down slightly Thursday, with a high of 97 predicted, before dropping into the 80s by Friday. Temperatures elsewhere in the Tri-Valley are expected to approach or exceed 100 Wednesday.

The heat comes after around 10 days of below-normal temperatures, particularly inland. Coastal temperatures could climb into the low 90s, while some interior and higher-elevation locations could reach triple digits. Overnight temperatures in warmer areas are expected to remain in the mid-60s to mid-70s.

Residents looking to cool off can visit the Pleasanton Library at 400 Old Bernal Avenue (open 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.). The city may also open additional official cooling centers during periods of extreme heat.

The National Weather Service urged residents to stay out of direct sunlight when possible, remain hydrated and move strenuous outdoor activities to cooler parts of the day. People working outdoors should take frequent breaks and seek shade or air conditioning.

Pets and children should never be left inside parked vehicles, even with the windows down.
