Wahab, a former California state senator and Hayward councilmember, took office Sept. 2 after narrowly winning a special election to fill the seat of former Congressman Eric Swalwell, who resigned in April following sexual assault allegations. In November, she will face Melissa Hernandez, president of the BART Board of Directors and former mayor of Dublin to fill the seat. Wahab won 53.1% to 46.9% in the August special election, according to the Secretary of State.

Wahab identifies as a progressive Democrat and is campaigning on priorities like affordable housing, universal healthcare, and strengthening the social safety net.
