PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton's oldest congregation will celebrate its 150th anniversary Sunday with music, remembrances, and refreshments.
GraceWay Church was founded in October 1876 with the help of Rev. William Wallace Brier, a man who helped found 26 churches across the Bay Area. In August 1876, a group of Pleasanton residents gathered at Centennial Hall on Main Street and voted to establish a Presbyterian congregation.
The congregation purchased two lots at Second and Neal streets from J.A. Neal, and built the original First Presbyterian Church of Pleasanton. The building, which is today home to the Lighthouse Baptist Church, was modeled after a quaint New England village church.
The church moved into a larger building on Mirador Drive in the late 1970s, following decades of growth. In 2001, it began fundraising to develop another campus on Busch Road and Valley Avenue, where it moved in 2008 under the name Centerpointe Presbyterian Church.
In 2016, the church changed its name to GraceWay Church, and switched its denominational affiliation from the Presbyterian Church to an Evangelical Presbyterian denomination. The church also sold its Busch Road property and relocated to its current location on 1183 Quarry Lane.
Over the years, the church has participated in a number of charitable activities, including partnerships supporting young people, people experiencing homelessness, and incarcerated individuals.
See here to RSVP to the celebration, which will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
