Hart Middle School Student Suffers Major Leg Injury In Pleasanton Crash

A 13-year-old student was struck by a turning driver while riding through a crosswalk Friday morning, police said.

PLEASANTON, CA — A 13-year-old student at Hart Middle School suffered a major injury to his leg after being struck by a car on his bike, according to the Pleasanton Police Department. The student was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, PPD Lt. Brandon Stocking said.

On Friday just before 8:36 a.m., a driver was making a left turn from southbound Willow Road to eastbound West Las Positas Boulevard when she struck a 13-year-old bicyclist crossing northbound in the crosswalk, Stocking said.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman, stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation. She was cited, though Stocking said police do not believe that drugs, alcohol, distracted driving, or speed contributed to the collision.

Hart Middle School Principal Gwendolyn DeWees acknowledged the collision in an email to families.

"A vehicle and a bicycle were involved in an accident at the intersection of Willow Road and West Las Positas Boulevard. A Hart Middle School student was involved in the collision, and emergency personnel responded to the scene," DeWees wrote. "Our thoughts are with the student and their family during this difficult time."

DeWees thanked emergency personnel for their "prompt response", and said that counselors and support staff are available to help students and staff. She also said that the school is, "committed to working with our families, local authorities, and community partners to promote safe travel to and from school. We appreciate everyone's continued care and vigilance, particularly during busy arrival and dismissal times."
