Falcons Flock Over to Foothill's 1st Annual Flock Party

For a Friday the 13th event, this first annual Foothill-uniting event went smoothly. Everyone at the Flock Party could fly high like a falcon.

Foothill High School did not hold a Sadie Hawkins Dance this year. Instead, it hosted its first annual Flock Party. And for its first go at a Foothill-uniting event, it was  a success.

Open exclusively to Foothill students and staff, the event took place this Friday, May 13 in the Foothill main quad. It was open until immediately after school (just after 2:30 p.m.) until 6:00 p.m.

The reason why the Flock Party replaced a typical spring dance was that Foothill didn't hold one this year. And because the funds cannot be used for other departments or reasons besides student affairs, the only choice Leadership had was to throw an alternative fête in order to not loose the money before the end of the year.

I admit that I've never been to a Sadies Dance, so it's not completely fair when I say that this was a much better alternative. But the atmosphere and activities made me feel that way. The event united Foothill in a way that dances can't.

Upon seeing the quad in all its new, inflatable glory, junior Brianna Janes remarked, "I thought this stuff only happens in Grease [the movie]!"

And she was right. It was such a new scene on the Foothill campus that it felt like it could only be the product of the silver screen.

For three-and-a-half hours, the Foothill population, somewhat incredibly relaxed as AP testing had just ended, loafed around campus in its after-hours to treat itself to what Leadership had to offer: free food (a hot dog lunch complete with a bag of chips and a drink, a snow cone, and some cotton candy per person), inflatable Pump It Up structures, an opportunity to get a Henna tattoo, and another opportunity to get your fortune told.

In the background, Deejay Amar played music to finalize the summer-y feel to the entire event. "They should've played this [type of good music] at [Junior] Prom!" Tina Shen said as she waited in line to get her snow cone. The music was so perfect at times (in my opinion) that I danced as I was taking notes for this blog entry.

Any downsides to the event? Incredibly long lines. Clearly, a majority of Foothill's 2,000 students were there. Eventually, the crowd split in half by 4:30 p.m., but not enough to relieve the long lines nearly enough.

But at the end of the day, students enjoyed their time. Senior Clare O'Leary said, "This is better [than the dance]. Everybody in the school gets to participate [in the Flock Party]."

A perfect way to unite Foothill and end AP testing season, I look forward to future Flock Parties. Besides, what Falcon wouldn't want something else to add to the Foothill repertoire to rub in Amador's face?
